Plastic Treasure

Recycling plastic in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is a significant environmental effort. The city faces challenges related to plastic waste due to its rapid urbanisation and population growth. Various initiatives and informal recycling networks have emerged to address the issue. Locals play a crucial role in collecting, separating, and selling plastic to recycling facilities. These individuals often work in difficult conditions, but their efforts contribute to reducing plastic pollution while generating income for their families.

Non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and community-based organisations in Dhaka also promote plastic recycling awareness and education. They run programs to encourage citizens to separate plastic waste from other trash and dispose of it properly. The government of Bangladesh has also taken steps to address plastic pollution through policies and regulations including a ban on single-use plastic bags.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain, including the need for improved waste management infrastructure and the development of a more formalised recycling industry. Nevertheless, recycling plastic in Dhaka reflects the city’s commitment to managing plastic waste and addressing the environmental impact associated with it.
