Shobha Battaglia was born in 1954 in Palermo, South Italy. As far back as she can remember, she has travelled between India and Italy. In 1970 she moved to Milan. In 1977 she went to India where she devoted herself to meditation and learning oriental music. In 1980 she moved to New York and a year later she came back to Sicily. During her stay, she started working for the L’Ora journal as a photographer. Mostly, she was taking care of politics and social issues during a war with the Mafia. One of hers reports, titled “Women and Mafia” became internationally known all over the world. Since 2007 she started working with video and founded the association Mother India School – Travelling Projects a school of photography that combines workshops and video documentary with special focus on the female world.
